DPS CHL Division Rolls Out New Correspondence Newsletter To Keep CHL Instructors and Applicants In The Know!

SAVE TIME...GO ONLINE!

The Texas DPS Concealed Handgun Licensing Division has rolled out an enhanced online application. All CHL applicants are now able to complete the entire application process online and schedule their digital fingerprint appointments for quicker processing.

The DPS is working on automating the entire process, however, required supplemental materials must still be mailed at this time.

Benefits of Applying Online:

  • Your application and payment are submitted directly to the DPS CHL Division which reduces application processing delays caused by mail handling and data entry.
  • You are in control of the information that is entered into the DPS system, ensuring better accuracy.
  • Feel safe knowing that the online payment process is secure and protected

Benefits of Digital Fingerprints:

  • Applicants that have their fingerprints digitally scanned, means less administrative overhead for instructors and more time for instruction.
  • Digital fingerprints have a 98% accuracy rate, which means fewer rejects and the inconvenience of reprinting for applicants.
  • Digital fingerprints are uploaded to the state's computer automatically, while rolled prints must be submitted via the postal service.

Good News for License Holders Renewing Their Concealed Handgun License:

Beginning May 1st, 2010, applicants renewing their CHL will no longer be required to submit fingerprints or photos as part of the renewal process.

NOTICE:

CHL Applicant Fingerprint Processing Delay by FBI

The DPS has been notified by the FBI that all fingerprint based background checks will be temporarily suspended beginning April 28, 2010 - May 3, 2010. The FBI Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) will be working with the U.S. Census Bureau to process more than 484,000 fingerprints for Census Bureau workers.

The FBI will resume processing applicant fingerprints beginning May 4, 2010 and it is therefore important to note that the backlog of processing the fingerprint based background checks could take an additional two weeks. All applications will be processed as quickly as possible once the FBI service returns to normal.
